Doubtful Sound – Experiencing the Overnight Cruise

I had an amazing experience with the Doubtful Sound overnight cruise, operated by Real Journeys aboard the Fiordland Navigator during April. I was considering spending a few days around the Catlins, before I was offered to join Lisa, Kristina, Marie, Karin & Nick on their family trip away. I’ve been to Milford Sound many times, which has easy(ish) road access, but never made it down to Doubtful Sound. The journey starts with a crossing of Lake Manapouri and past the Manapouri Power Station – New Zealand’s largest hydroelectric power station.

Doubtful Sound is simply stunning – with plenty of wildlife seen, including Dusky Dolphins at sunset! We only saw a couple of other boats during the 24 hours on the water – a totally different feel to Milford Sound, which always has several boats crusing the fiord.
